OnePlus might be skipping India for the standard OnePlus 16, and that's a pretty big deal. According to recent reports, the company looks set to launch the OnePlus 16R as its next big phone for the Indian market instead of the full-fat flagship. The regular OnePlus 16 seems to be staying in China only, while the OnePlus 16R could expand to international markets including India.
This shift makes a lot of sense when you look at the price situation. Right now, the OnePlus 15R costs Rs 59,999 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage version, while the OnePlus 15 with identical specs runs Rs 85,999. That's a massive gap, and things are only getting worse. Component and RAM costs keep climbing, which means if OnePlus launched the OnePlus 16 in India with even better specs, it'd likely cost an eye-watering amount that most buyers would reject.
OnePlus is clearly playing it smart here. The company's been struggling in the Indian market for a while now, and throwing an ultra-expensive flagship at consumers won't fix that problem. Instead, betting on the OnePlus 16R makes way more sense. The OnePlus 16R could land in India around Rs 60,000, which gives the company a fighting chance at actually moving units without alienating customers.
Interestingly, neither the OnePlus 16 nor the OnePlus 16R are expected to hit Europe or North America. That means OnePlus is really narrowing its focus to Asia and specific international territories. It's a different strategy from what we've seen before, and it shows the company's adapting to market realities rather than forcing products where they won't sell.
