Something's happening in the phone market right now that's about to hit your wallet hard. Memory chip costs have skyrocketed nearly 300% in the past year, and every major smartphone maker from Apple to OnePlus is passing those costs straight to consumers. The festive season, which usually brings discounts and deals, is looking a lot thinner this year because makers simply can't absorb these rising expenses anymore.
Here's what's driving the crunch: the three companies that basically control global memory chip production, SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron, have been shifting their factories toward specialized memory chips used in AI infrastructure instead of the regular memory that phones need. That's left smartphone makers scrambling for basic components while facing a supply shortage of more than 20%. Industry experts predict this squeeze won't ease until production ramps up meaningfully in the second half of 2027 at the earliest.
The price increases are already rolling out across India. Apple's iPhone 17 jumped from Rs 82,900 to Rs 99,900 for the base model, while the iPhone Air shot up by Rs 30,000. Samsung raised the Galaxy S25 by Rs 12,000 on one variant. Realme, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus have all hiked prices by anywhere from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 across different models. It's not isolated to premium flagships either, budget and mid-range phones are getting hit too.
India's smartphone market is already feeling the pain. Volumes are expected to fall 10% this festive season compared to last year, following an 11% decline in Q2 2026. The global market isn't doing much better, with shipments down 7.4% year-on-year. For buyers, that old festive-season weapon of aggressive pricing and heavy discounts seems to have disappeared, at least until supply normalizes and memory costs come back down to earth.
