India's phone manufacturing story is getting wild. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 this week at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, and the numbers he highlighted are absolutely bonkers. Mobile phone exports have skyrocketed to Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25, up from just Rs 1,500 crore a decade ago. That's not a typo, that's a 127-fold explosion in mobile exports over the last decade.
What makes this even more impressive is where those phones are going. India's import dependence on mobile phones has basically vanished. Back in 2014-15, imported phones made up 75 percent of what Indians bought. Today, that number sits at just 0.02 percent. The country went from being almost entirely reliant on foreign manufacturers to dominating its own market and exporting globally. That's a complete turnaround in just ten years.
The broader electronics story paints the same picture. Production across the entire electronics sector jumped from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 12 lakh crore in 2024-25, a six-fold jump. Mobile phone production alone grew 28-fold in the same period, reaching Rs 5.45 lakh crore. This didn't happen by accident. The government's Semicon India Programme, launched in January 2022, specifically targeted building a complete semiconductor ecosystem covering everything from design to packaging and module manufacturing.
The vision driving all of this is AtmaNirbhar Bharat, India's push toward self-reliance. Instead of importing components and finished phones, the country has systematically built up its own manufacturing infrastructure across the entire value chain. Three-day conferences like SEMICON India 2026 are where industry leaders, policymakers, and international partners align on the next phase. India isn't just making phones for itself anymore, it's becoming the factory that supplies the world.
